Wildlife Reproduction

In the heart of nature, each birth is a miracle, a testament to life’s resilience. Wildlife reproduction is a dance of life, intricate and awe-inspiring. Through assisted reproduction, we safeguard endangered species, nurturing the delicate threads of biodiversity. Together, we can ensure our planet’s wild wonders continue to thrive.

Fertility Assessment

Unravelling Infertility in Endangered Species

Getting pregnant is sometimes not easy! Despite best conservation efforts, infertility might persist in endangered species. CARES investigates causes of infertility, assessing male and female reproductive organs. By understanding causes, we develop targeted solutions, ensuring the reproductive success of endangered species.

  • Ultrasound examination of urogenital organs
  • Assessment of fertility and remaining breeding potential
  • Assessment of aged animals prior contraceptive measures
  • Fertility treatment

Semen Collection

Preserving Futures, One Sample at a Time

CARES collects sperm from the epididymis, by manual stimulation, urethral catheterization or electroejaculation in a wide range of species. Samples are analysed, chilled or cryopreserved for immediate use in artificial breeding programs or long-term storage in Cryobanks.

  • Sperm extraction from epididymis after castration post mortem
  • Manual semen collection elephants
  • Electroejaculation / urethral catheterization
  • Semen analysis and preservation
  • Cooling and transport

Assisted Reproduction Technology

Saving Species, One Birth at a Time

Assisted reproduction technologies involve interventions aiding endangered species to get offspring. Drawing from more than 25 years of experience in wildlife reproduction CARES employs techniques like oestrous induction, semen collection/transport and artificial insemination. Interventions aim at enhancing breeding and genetic diversity, and contribute to conservation efforts.

  • Matching of endocrine profiles and organ function
  • Oestrous inductions
  • Semen collections and transport for artificial inseminations
  • Artificial inseminations
  • Gamete collection assisting IVF programs

Parturition Management

Enhancing Parturition Care

CARES aims at ensuring safe births in rhinoceros and elephants. We monitor pregnancies and assess nutrition, and barn setups. Ante-partum facility assessments and remote or on site vet support aim at minimizing risks to reduce labour complications and offspring mortality in high-risk pregnancies.

  • Ante-partum assessment of facility set-up
  • High-risk pregnancy evaluation
  • Remote, stand-by veterinary assistance
  • On site veterinary assistance during parturition
  • Post-partum consultancy
